Interestingly the very first members of WAG CHELSEA were all wives of Army Officers.Â
Using a holistic approach to Community development at the grass root level, the groups focus has been on the economically weaker, socially deprived and backward members of society.Â
Their first project, called Adopt a School was started in a government school in a village near NOIDA (a suburb of New Delhi, India). This group of twelve army wives worked there with seven hundred children for three years between '92 and '94.Â
Apart from health and medicare issues for the children, there were group activities like games, arts, crafts, singing, story telling, debate and drama.Â
Despite the excellent results this hard work bore, the project faced stiff resistance, aggression and even physical violence from the local villagers who wanted to benefit monetarily from the project. This led to the termination of the project in December 1994.Â
That same year the NGO was registered in New Delhi.
Initial funding of WAG CHELSEA came from the families of the members. Over the years WAG CHELSEA has received funding from top national and international funding agencies.Â
Since its inception WAG CHELSEA has worked extensively in the fields of:Â
Education for underprivileged children, especially for the girl child
Health services for underprivileged children and their gaurdians Â
Adult education
Crèches for the children of slum dwellers
Reproductive Health
Sex and sexuality in schools
HIV/AIDS Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Today WAG CHELSEA is in its eighteenth year of successful operations and strives to expand still further.
