Born in 1941, Doe Nair spent her childhood and youth in Shimla (India) where she had the privilege of attending premier educational institutions. She did her entire schooling, at Loretto Convent, Tara Hall and graduated from St Bede’s College.
Soon after graduation she joined the British Overseas Airways Corporation, now British Airways, as a flight stewardess. She married a Cavalry Officer of the Indian Army and spent twenty-eight years of her life as an Army wife, during which time she lived in many parts of India including the remote far Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. There she spent her time working with the local tribal women. While in Wellington, South India she worked for three years as a volunteer outreach worker with the Family Planning Association Of India, a chapter of “Planned Parenthood” London. This work took her to tribal’s in forgotten regions of Tamil Nadu untouched by modern civilisation. In Ambala (North West India) in the early `70’s, she helped establish Mother Teresa’s Shishu Bhawan, which looks after abandoned, orphaned and destitute children.
