Our Interventions
The Ten Bed CHELSEA – Community Care Centre (CCC)This Intervention is supported by The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). It was set up in 2001and was earlier called ‘AKANKSHYA’ but has recently been renamed. The CCC provides free institutional Care to People Living with HIV. It admits men, women and children. It has a patient base runs into thousands and this number keeps increasing every month. The following are the basic functions of The CCC:
1. Treats basic opportunistic infections. 2. Refers critical cases to government hospitals. 3. Links its patients to the nearest government ART clinic and monitors adherence to treatment with follow up visits at home. 4. Counsels individuals and families. 5. Refers people to the: Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission Clinics (PPTCTC) Direct Observation Treatment Short Course (DOTS) for TB. “SAMARTH” – The Home Based Care and Support Programme This Intervention is supported by USAID and nutritional support by The Clinton Foundation and a Faith Based Organisation of the Sikh community. The SAMARTH programme provides Home Based Care and Support to families of Infected and Affected Children and is supported by USAID and FHI. The programme started in 2002 and is currently providing 489 children nutritional, educational, Life Skills Education (LSE), recreational, psychosocial and medical support. Nutritional Support is provided by The Clinton Foundation and a Faith Based Organisation of the Sikh community. Education Support is through a preparatory school in the Drop in Centre, linkages with mainstream schools, LSE and vocational training. Recreation Support is through story telling, hobbies, games, excursions and selective TV viewing. Psychosocial Support through counseling. The beneficiaries, depending on age and risk behavior are counseled on HIV prevention methods especially on Abstinence and Being Faithful (A and AB). Medical Support through CCC and linkages with the closest pediatric centre for specialist treatment and to the ART centers for Pediatric ARV an initiative of the Clinton Foundation (CF) and the Government of India. It refers beneficiaries to the CCC. ART centers, ICTC, PPTCTC, DOTS and Government initiatives for widows and the poor. Peer Educators: This programme has a very strong component of Peer Educators (PEs) in the age group of 13 to 18 and adult Community Volunteers (CVs). The project staff, CVs and PEs visit identified homes and train the care givers on Home Based Care. The staff visits patients who are hospitalized and accompanies children for the monthly collection of ARV and visits to the pediatricians. They also link the beneficiaries with other government initiatives for the poor and PLHIV. The PEs disseminate information on HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections to their peers in the community and in school. |
